This title describes the principal duties and obligations of employers and employees as outlined in the Health and Safety at Work Acts 1989 to 2005 and including subsequent Regulations. It covers all areas of occupational health and safety law, including that relevant to the construction industry and the caring professions, e.g. childcare.

It addresses issues relating to the provision and promotion of safe and healthy working practices, systems and training. It identifies and discusses risk factors in relation to safety under the Health, Safety and Work General Purpose Regulations. It discusses the role and function of the Health and Safety Authority, and outlines the Health Safety and Welfare Construction Regulations 2006, including the legal duties imposed by those Regulations.It introduces legislative provisions governing employee welfare, such as maternity leave and unfair dismissal, and considers the issue of Insurance in relation to the workplace and the Law governing this practice.

It examines the roles and functions of the Rights Commissioner, Employment Equality Authority, Employment Appeals Tribunal and the Labour Court in relation to workplace welfare. It is suitable for: Students taking courses on Construction, Security Studies, Childcare, Introduction to Nursing, Social Care, Health Care, Community and Health Services; where Safety and Health at Work FETAC level 5 is a module.
