Excavations 2004

This year, probably for the first time in the history of the compiling of the Excavations bulletin, the number of entries (and number of licences issued) has fallen. Is this a trend that is set to continue or are we likely to see a stabilisation of numbers at about 2000? Only time will tell. But we are continuing to see a growing number of licences being issued in Northern Ireland, so the ‘Tiger’ phase may not be completely ended! The year 2004 also saw the introduction of sites being excavated under ‘ministerial direction’. This year also has seen a number of cave excavations taking place, in various parts of the country and with various results. To move then to a very different, industrial, type of site, several tanneries were excavated, particularly in Dublin. This is a site type whose numbers have been growing steadily in the bulletin in the past few years.

Excavations 2005

For the second year in a row there is a slight drop in the number of sites listed (1,986). The volume for 2005 contains an interesting and varied range of sites, and some of the ones that stand out are those of post-medieval date, including a major glassworks, the Sirocco Works in Belfast (Ballymacarret, Co. Down). Brick clamps again feature (as at Coonagh West, Co. Limerick), and even a post office/smithy (Philpotstown 1, Philpotstown, Co. Meath). Who would have thought that post offices would already be the subjects of archaeological investigation? As always, there is a wide range of prehistoric and medieval sites.

Landscapes, Rocks and Fossils: The Geological Heritage of County Sligo

Sligo is known throughout the world for its spectacular scenery, of which Benbulben is the most famous icon. However, few people are aware that Sligo’s extraordinary landscape is the product of colliding continents and balmy tropical seas, spewing volcanic explosions and crushing sheets of ice. The silent stones of Sligo contain an ancient dynamic story. This book explores some of Sligo’s important rock, fossil and landscape sites. The full details, prepared by the Geological Survey of Ireland, will be used to help conserve the sites for future generations. The initial audit was undertaken by Dr. Matthew Parkes and Claire McAteer and is dedicated to the late Conor McDermot, geologist.

Mapping Ireland

This is the first book dedicated to explaining Ireland's counties. It contains a wealth of fascinating and little-known facts such as the origin and meaning of our county names. It also incorporates an index of over 500 family names showing the clans most associated with each region.

The maps in this collection are replicas taken from a 300-year-old original and show Ireland as it was when the thirty-two counties were first completed.
